What do Plumbers do?
Plumbing and Gas-fitting work involves installing and repairing heating and ventilation systems, general plumbing and drainage systems, metal roofing and gas-fitting.
A Plumber may perform the following tasks:
- prepare and/or study plans and specifications to work out the layout of plumbing systems and materials needed
- find and mark position for connections, then cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes, measure pipes and mark cutting or bending lines
- cut, thread and bend pipes, assemble and install piping, valves and fittings, join pipe sections and secure pipes
- test lines as required by local plumbing regulations
- install & service equipment such as boilers, heating and cooling systems, gas appliances, water tanks, water heaters, solar water heating systems, fixtures such as toilets, wash basins and industrial processing units
- install, maintain and repair plumbing systems including underground drainage pipes
Subject to licensing restrictions, plumbers may perform all of the tasks listed above.
How do I become a Plumber?
To become a Plumber you have to complete an Australian Apprenticeship in Plumbing. Entry requirements may vary but employers generally require a minimum of Year 10. Training is usually on and off the job training. The off-the-job training is provided though Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s). Details of the training may vary depending on the needs of the employer and are finalized as part of the training agreement. Group Training Companies such as NECA Apprenticeships provide work placements so you can complete on-the-job competencies and receive support throughout your apprenticeship
Qualifying as a Plumber involves:
- Four years commitment
- Attending paid work with a “host employer” for the duration of the apprenticeship
- Attend off-the-job training at an RTO

- Enjoy practical work
- Good hand-eye coordination
- Able to work independently
- Able to work at heights and in various weather conditions
- Good interpersonal skills
- Physically fit and good mobility
