You may be able to start an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) while you are still at school. An ASbA enables you to gain a vocational and technical qualification while completing your school studies and give you a head start with work. ASbAs are a combination of a secondary school qualification, part time paid employment in your chosen industry as well as a nationally recognised qualification.
ASbAs are a great career-starting option for students who are 15 years or older.
ASbAs provide a number of benefits to students:
- Undertaken whilst completing your secondary school qualification (VCE or VCAL)
- May contribute to your entire score (please talk to your careers advisor for further details)
- Valuable hands on experience
- Paid employment
- A nationally recognised qualification
Both the employer and the ASbA are required to sign a training contract which links to an industrial award or agreement. Wages are paid for hours at work when the ASbA is not at formal, ‘off-the-job’ training.
Many schools now offer the option for students to start an ASbA. Your careers advisor and teachers will know if you are able to undertake an ASbA while you are studying and can assist in choosing the most suitable subjects.
“Thanks for all the great opportunities and support you provide our students. The SBAT students which have been placed with 370 have only ever had positive experiences.” - John Horley (Schools Careers Coordinator)
