New projects create jobs. As the Victorian Government announced their plans for all homes to be installed with Smart Meters, it provided the opportunity for 370° apprentices to assist in the execution of the project.
370˚ first year apprentices were undertaking the same task which was great experience but also limiting in terms of the level of exposure. After receiving feedback from apprentices who had been assisting with the Smart Meter project over 6 consistent months, their fears were increasing around their lack of varied skills especially when compared with other first year peers.
To combat this, Steve McKay 370° apprenticeships Field Officer, conjured up a plan to help reduce the skills gap once apprentices had been returned from the Smart Meter project. This involved working with the 370° skills centre and coordinating a practical training schedule to build apprentice confidence and experience. Tasks involved wiring, connecting, power points, lighting, two way switching, cat-wire and cable tray; all tasks equivalent to apprentices beyond 1st year.
Steve McKay shares, "I had an idea to help the apprentices increase their skill levels. 4 days into the 2 week program and I only have complete confidence in their ability. All 11 apprentices have excelled beyond 1st year expertise."
"Their confidence and experience has grown each day, now they're itching to get out there. I can't wait to see where they are in 3 years time."
James Abbott, the teacher responsible for assisting with the practical component at 370° skills centre, comments, "The group has enjoyed the chance to be up skilled by getting practical tips and trick's in the electrical field from some seasoned electrician's involving real world situation not just hypothetical".
We wish this group the best of luck.
