electrial apprenticeships

What do electricians do?

Electricians install, maintain, repair and test electrical and electronic equipment for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes. Electricians may also work on electrical distribution equipment.

Electricians may perform the following tasks;

  • Reading electrical, architectural and mechanical diagrams,drawings or specifications to determine job requirements
  • Plan the layout of wiring systems
  • Test for, locate and repair electrical malfunctions
  • Install electrical and electronic control systems and cabling
  • Install electrical equipment such as storage heaters, water heaters, electrical signs, switchboards and motors
  • Assemble and fabricate electrical and electronic components and appliances
  • Connect electrical equipment to power supplies
  • Connect switches, outlets and other fittings
  • Connect circuit breakers
  • Maintain automated production processes

With further experience, business training and completion of a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) course, electricians may choose to become electrical contractors, running their own business.

How do I become an electrician?

To become an electrician you have to complete an Australian Apprenticeship, being the Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Systems Electrician). Entry requirements may vary but employers generally require year 11, however many prefer year 12. Training is both on and off-the-job. The off-the-job training can be provided through the victec skills centre or other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).

Qualifying as an electrician involves:

  • Four year commitment
  • Attending paid work for the duration of the apprenticeship
  • Attend off-the-job training at the NECA Skills Centre or other RTOs

Ideal personal requirements to be an electrician include:

  • Enjoy mathematical and technical activities
  • Good hand-eye coordination
  • Diagnostic ability
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Able to undertake precise and detailed work
  • Physically fit
  • Good communication skills
